The top spot is an elusive creature though and even Larry and Sergey wouldn’t guarantee it to you. Google’s a very big, very clever machine and it’s looking to see not just who you think you are but who others think you are.

Google looks at your reputation
Think of Google as being a bit like a job interviewer. Your CV might say that you’re the best thing since sliced bread but if your referees reckon you don’t work for toffee you’re probably not going to get the job.
Google is very similar. It will look at your site and see what you say about yourself and then look at other sites and cross reference that with what they say (how they link to you). If they agree it’ll bump you up and if they don’t it’ll send you packing.
